What is raw food?

Anything that has not been heated to above around 115 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees centigrade) is considered to be raw but some people like to put a further definition on what a raw food diet is. However there is no reason why you should not eat raw fish and meat, the Japanese do well eating raw fish. There is certainly a growing body of evidence that eating a large percentage of raw food is beneficial and does promote weight loss, which in itself has significant health benefits. Which foods are included in a raw food diet?

A raw food diet consists of much more than fruits and vegetables. It includes nuts and seeds, sprouted grains and juices. It can also contain some fermented and processed foods such as raw soy sauce and miso, raw nut butters and cold pressed oils such as olive oil.

A raw diet does not have to be cold food only. You can heat food so long as you do not take it to boiling point, anything under 115 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees centigrade) is fine.

Options for going raw

If you want to go on a completely raw diet, eating raw foods that have higher fat/calorie content will help to keep your energy levels ups but while still losing weight. This includes nuts and seeds, avocados and bananas.

If you want to lose weight but are not going completely raw you are better off sticking to fresh raw fruits and vegetables as these will provide you with nutrition without adding many extra calories. You need to include at least 50% raw food with every meal and avoid too many fatty, starchy, processed foods such as French fries, fried food in general, white rice, white bread, cakes, full fat dairy products and anything laden with sugar.

Increasing the amount of raw food, especially raw fruits and vegetables, in your diet will help you with weight loss and give you a healthier diet.

Simple Food and Diet Nutrition Remedies for Your Common Health Ailments


You are what you eat is a simple, time tested adage that still holds true today. There are non-medical remedies that can help with many of today's most common illnesses and conditions. Stress. Holy basil, also known as Tulsi, has been used to relieve stress and normalize cortical levels. Limiting caffeine can help the body to reduce the level of adrenaline. When you're particularly stressed out, eat carbohydrates and fresh vegetables. They help the body release serotonin which produce a feeling of well-being.

Cancer. Consuming the trace elements that are plentiful in seafood has been shown to help cancer patients. Broccoli, mustard greens, cabbage and turnips have been recently touted as not only preventative maintenance but perhaps even cures for different types of cancers. Limit your fats.

Understanding Real Food Diets


Although real food diets have been gaining in popularity, exactly what a "real food diet" involves depends a bit on who you ask. That said -- I'll give you the simple definition that I use for my own diet.

Only a hundred years ago, the need to define a real food diet wouldn't have made much sense to anyone. "Real food" was all there was. But now? Well...now it's a bit more complicated.

Eating an unprocessed diet today isn't nearly a common as it once was. In the U.S., anyway, our food supply is very much different from what it was a hundred years ago. While you can debate the pros and cons of this, our health seems to show this as a change for the worse.

The bulk of what we eat now comes in a package, has a lot of interesting food science behind it, and is processed in multiple ways before we consume it. The result has been a cheap, abundant food supply - unfortunately, much of it isn't very healthy for us...or very real. Switching back to a real food diet really just means eating fewer of these industrially-produced foods.

To be more specific, a real food diet is one based on foods that humans have eaten for thousands of years; that were raised, processed, and prepared in traditional ways; and that are produced and distributed in a sustainable manner. Basically, eating this sort of diet can include almost any type of food -- as long as it's the "real" version. Here are more tips:

Meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy are all fine, but they should come from animals that are pasture-fed, not confined and fed on grain. These items should be hormone-free and antibiotic-free, and organic, ideally. Fish should be wild-caught, preferably from a sustainable fishery.

Grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables are all an important part of a real, whole foods diet. They shouldn't be highly processed, and should be organic.

Fats and oils should be traditional choices like butter, coconut oil, and olive oil, and should also be lightly processed.

While there are definitely more things to know about real food, that should give you a good start. Just using these few guidelines to include more of these foods in your diet can have a huge positive effect on your health. Give it a try for a month or so and see what it can do for you!
